January 5, 2023

Welcome back, and happy New Year! The start of a new year is often a time for reflection and renewal, offering us the opportunity to set new goals and realign our day-to-day lives with our life's purpose. I find this to be particularly true, as January marks the anniversary of my joining ETSU. As I embark on my 12th year as President of this university, I would like to thank the members of our Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, student body, and community for their ongoing support and collaboration. Donna, Jackson, and I feel truly honored to serve this institution, which I believe is both exceptional and exemplary.

It is exceptional because of the world-class academic, creative, athletic, and research activities occurring here. It is exemplary because all of these endeavors are rooted in a deep commitment to service and the fulfillment of our mission to improve the quality of life for people in this region and beyond.

As you read through this week's edition of this newsletter, that theme of service — to our communities and to one another — will emerge time and again. ETSU is a place where people give their whole hearts and their best efforts. A place where we continue to achieve new levels of excellence. And a place I am proud to call home.

Celebrate the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Nearly 55 years after his death, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s impact continues to reverberate worldwide. Dr. King worked to create a society where justice, equality, love, and fellowship prevail. He was a servant leader who united and mobilized people in pursuit of a beautiful vision for how the world could be. The university will be closed on January 16 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. However, I encourage you to consider the occasion more than just a day away from work. I hope you will use this time to honor Dr. King's profound impact and continue his legacy of service. ETSU's Mary V. Jordan Multicultural Center will host several events on campus to commemorate MLK Day. These include educational programs and opportunities to follow in Dr. King's footsteps and serve others. Similarly, numerous events will be held throughout the community. Visit the ETSU website for details and a list of campus and community events.

'Thank You' to Our Facilities, Grounds, Housing, and Public Safety Teams for Their Service

While many on campus enjoyed some much-deserved time off over the past two weeks, several ETSU team members — particularly our facilities, grounds, housing, and public safety staff — were hard at work containing and repairing weather-related damages, which occurred across campus. These individuals worked long hours under challenging conditions to ensure our campus was safe and operable. Repairs and cleanup will continue over the next few weeks. Please be patient through this process and share your gratitude with those undertaking these unanticipated and significant restoration efforts.

Protect Yourself and Others Through Flu Shots and COVID Boosters

Cases of COVID-19, the flu, RSV, and a series of other viruses are prevalent. Please consider getting a flu shot and a COVID vaccine or booster dose to help protect yourself and those who may be vulnerable to severe illness from infections. Vaccines are widely available through most pharmacies and health care providers.
