News from the Center for Nursing Advancement
Representing at the International Congress of Nursing, 2023
Dr. John Nelson Reports
The Center for Nursing Advancement, housed within the College of Nursing, is working to be a world leader in the science of wellbeing at work. The primary goal of the Center is to build a program of recruitment and retention of nurses within the Appalachian Highlands and across Tennessee, with wellbeing at work serving as the foundation.
Dr. John Nelson, Executive Director of the Center for Nursing Advancement, along with several researchers in wellbeing at work from around the globe, presented five research posters at the International Congress of Nursing in Montreal, Canada, from July 1 through July 5. Dr. Nelson reports, "It has become clear across the global wellbeing research community that in order for recruitment and retention of nurses across the pipeline to be effective, there must be an inclusion of wellbeing. This includes taking time to measure the construct of wellbeing and when presenting the data to nurses across the pipeline, take time to have the nursing staff share their experiences and even trauma experienced during the pandemic within their respective roles. Until we do this, aspects of nursing operations like floating to another unit to care for patients other than your home clinical care unit can be a trigger of trauma from what occurred during the pandemic. When building nursing back, after the pandemic, wellbeing at work needs to be a focal point in this process. We are learning this in our global research in wellbeing at work of nurses."
